What I’m reading

February 28, 2006 @ 9:34 pm | Category: Pot Luck

At the sidebar under “current readings” you will see the things I am reading or have read recently. From time to time I will comment on some of these. I am especially excited to read Nussbaum’s book. It’s a great illustration of the exciting things that happen in the world of ideas when women are part of the conversation.

Loveable Dr. Phil

February 24, 2006 @ 4:03 pm | Category: body, media

My favorite feminist magazine, Bitch, is ten years old this month and has several excellent articles(issue 31). One called “From One Boob to Another” critiques Dr. Phil’s new-found vocation to help women with their body image. After telling women to embrace who they are he goes on to send a few of his guests to a Beverly Hills plastic surgeon for a little work on their breasts. Maybe women already know what’s wrong with them and don’t need Dr. Phil to recommend a surgeon.

If you’ve never read Bitch this is the issue to get. You can find it at major bookstores.

Can you say vagina?

Women’s e-news reports that Catholic universities are clamping down on the popular performances of the Vagina Monologues. As far as I’m concerned, Catholic universities can do what they wish on their campuses. I wrote about Eve Ensler’s play for the sadly now defunct Regeneration Quarterly.

Welcome!

February 15, 2006 @ 2:41 pm | Category: welcome

Here I go in my first attempt to launch a blog. I feel a little exposed without an editor and perhaps waited too long to take up blogging. I guess that proves I ‘m not an early adopter. This is sort of like an idea lab for me. I will write whenever the mood strikes and will included just about anything that hits me on any given day.
I am an avid reader (Utne, First Things, Bitch, Wilson Quarterly, Time, Sojourner, Reason, The Atlantic, Ms and many websites and, of course, books!) I will proably comment on those. I also keep up with pop culture as much as I can. Please be patient as I learn how to use this medium. Thank you for visiting and I hope to hear from you soon.
